Parshat Vayera: Bnei Noach and the Way of Kindness 

In this week's Torah portion (Parshat Vayeira), we find several foundational lessons regarding the necessity of treating others with loving-kindness and compassion. The Divine revelation to Abraham on the third day after his circumcision shows the vital importance of visiting the sick. Furthermore, the fact that Abraham paused his direct conversation with G-d to welcome passing travelers gives us a spiritual principle: "Welcoming guests is even greater than receiving the Divine Presence."

G-d appeared to Abraham while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the hottest part of the day, waiting for guests to come (Genesis 18:1). This shows that G-d came to him because Abraham was so eager to practice hospitality. He sat outside in the extreme heat on purpose, looking for tired travelers so he could help them. Lech-Lecha: The Fear of G-d and the Foundations of Morality 

In Parshat Lech-Lecha, Abraham and Sarah descend to Egypt due to famine. Before crossing the border, Abraham makes a surprising request of Sarah: "Please say that you are my sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live because of you" (Genesis 12:13). This prompt raises a question: How could Abraham rely on Sarah’s merit for his own safety, and was he not putting Sarah herself in a spiritual and physical danger?

The Zohar (Lech-Lecha 77b) reveals that Abraham experienced an extraordinary measure of Divine revelation due to Sarah. The Midrash (Bereishit Rabbah 60:16) notes that open miracles occurred inside her tent. Abraham recognized her immense holiness and righteousness and knew Heaven would not permit her to be hurt. The sin of the Generation of the Dispersion (Dor HaFlagah), which occurred a few hundreds years after the Generation of the Flood, presents a distorted human attempt to create unity among all people and to speak a single language. On the surface, this sounds like a beneficial attempt to create a better society. If so, the question arises: why was the Generation of the Dispersion punished, and why did the Creator scatter them across the entire earth?

The Generation of the Dispersion carried out an act of rebellion against the Creator. They built a tower whose top is in the heavens for this purpose.
