- Participating in idolatrous rituals vs. family gatheringIn Questions & Answers·July 26, 2022Hi, I was invited by my father to a Buddhism ceremony of putting my grandmother's bone into the headquarter graveyard of the Buddhism sect. The ceremony is held at the graveyard facility, a property of the temple, and seemingly with reciting Buddhism mantra by monks. The family need to pay to the graveyard to have the monk recite mantra. My family have a family grave, so I think this burial of the bone is done voluntarily with a part of the bone of my grandmother. I'm sure that my father will feel bad if I don't attend, but it's not dangerous situation for me. My father has a liberal policy. Is it permissible to attend the ceremony? I guess no. My rabbi, Rabbi Mordechay Grumach of Chabad Kyoto, recommended me to ask this here, as he feels he is not an expert of Noahide issues and thinks I should be friendly with my family as much as Torah permits. The link below is the web site of the graveyard, explaining the flow of the ceremony (in Japanese). https://otani-hombyo.hongwanji.or.jp/main/nokotsu/sodan_nokotsu/0670

- Participating in idolatrous rituals vs. family gatheringIn Questions & AnswersJuly 26, 2022BH Thank you very much for the comment. I feel the ceremony is more religious event than a customary basic funerals, because the funeral itself was already done about 2 years ago and the ceremony is seemingly not always held. I think only two of my grandparent have this ceremony, including this time, out of my 4 grandparents, all of whom already passed away. I attended the funeral of this grandmother before, which was not held in a temple. At that time, I stayed silently in the backside of the funeral hall away from the center of funeral rites (e.g. offering incense). This time, the gathering would be very small in the property of the headquarter temple full of Buddhism mood, which would mean there is no hiding place and surrounding people would naturally appreciate the work of monks. How do you think I should behave there? This is really a question.0
- Participating in idolatrous rituals vs. family gatheringIn Questions & AnswersJuly 27, 2022I'd recommend you use your best judgment given the ruling I cited above. The exception to the ruling I mentioned previously should apply (i.e., you may attend to avoid arousing bad feelings), for you are aware of idolatry and will not engage in it. (I mentioned the exception to the exception on, say, eating from a sacrifice to an idol, for lack of context on the gathering.)0

- Participating in idolatrous rituals vs. family gatheringIn Questions & AnswersJuly 27, 2022I'm digesting the points... One of the points seems to be a question which is more embarrassing to my family (1) not attending the ceremony or (2) my possible rejection of idolatrous actions in front of the monks etc. Hmm... difficult judgement. I understand that entering a house of idolatry or attending a ceremony of idolatry for not embarrassing one's father and mother are OK for Noahides unless the one commit particular idolatrous action, right?0

I used Google Chrome and it worked just fine. I imagine that Mozilla Firefox will also work fine, although I haven't tried it, that's only a guess. But if you're using Safari and can't access any parts of the website, switch to Chrome and it should work fine. Thanks.10
