The Oval Office

“Mr. President, Rabbi Tarfon will be here in five minutes!” Margo said to the President, her head poking into the entrance of the Oval Office. She had been his assistant for months now.

Without looking away from the paper in front of him, he said, “Okay”. In front of him was his Education and Sharing Day proclamation for the year, as well as a golden lettered printout of the same on his usual black folio. This year’s proclamation focused on the Noahide Laws, seven primordial, Divine laws underpinning much of the world’s morality. Every president has issued an Education Day proclamation every year since 1978, and the entire series lies stacked on his desk. They were printed on white, coated paper. The president reflectively wet his finger with his tongue, picked up the stack, and flipped through it along its left side. Satisfied, he placed his thumb on his lips. The president lay back in his chair and stared at the ceiling.

“Presidents saying these truths loud and proud was good for the character of the country,” he muttered. “I’m sure this is one of the reasons crime rates have been going down. But why is mental illness still on the rise?” He pondered whether he knows anyone who models a meaningful, moral life for Americans, especially the children. He thought, Do they have anyone who’s showing them how to live life and do right instead of wrong? The episode from the 1960s Adam West Batman series, where Batman could not pursue the villain because he was intoxicated, came to mind. Why’s there nothing like that now? You know, something that teaches the kids the very basics of how to behave, like no drunk driving, but without just pushing it on them?

His eyes pass over the words beneath his signature, “…calling upon all citizens to reflect on the responsibility of education grounded in moral values…”.

We’re going to ask Rabbi Tarfon to spread this everywhere. The American people, and of course their children, need to know that there is real right and wrong, and that we have a job in life.
