It is forbidden to worship, praise, thank or sing to an idol, with words or in thoughts. It is not permitted to offer sacrifices to an idol in a manner similar to offering sacrifices in the Temple, or in any other manner.
It is permitted to degrade an idol with any form of worship that was not used in the Temple.
Deities that can play a role in people's lives today are: hunger for power, wealth, Extra-marital illicit sex, self-centeredness, etc.
To worship these idols is to pay attention and spend time on these forbidden actions. The wrong thought of attributing your happiness to them.
