Our God and Our Master

For December 22, 2022

Genesis 41:51

כִּ֤י אֲנִ֣י יָ֭דַעְתִּי כִּֽי־גָד֣וֹל יְהֹוָ֑ה וַ֝אֲדֹנֵ֗ינוּ מִכׇּל־אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Praise G-d, because I know that G-d is great. G-d, our Master, is greater than alle the gods in heaven and on earth.

We can sometimes intellectually reason very well that G-d is above all other gods. After all, we believe in 1 G-d Who created the heavens and the earth, the seas and all that is.

Emotionally, we do sometimes find it difficult, not that we don't know that there is 1 G-d, but to recognise that really all the powers and forces we experience in our lives are from Him. Because if He has all the power, why....and anyone can think of an example that has taken place in his life that he does not understand.

In Hebrew it says the verb "yada". This verb is also used for Adam and Eve. In Genesis 4:1, we read, "Now the man had known his wife Eve..." which means complete unification. When you are truly one with the other, you know better how he thinks, what he feels and, above all, what he means.

Thus, man should try to become one with HaShem. Learning and studying Who He is, what He "thinks", what He "feels" and what He means. Then we learn to recognise that everything He does is for our good. Even then we can be sad about an event, but deep down there is also the realisation that He makes it happen because He loves us and because He wants a relationship with us.

We do not believe in idols and we must learn that there are no powers or forces that can do anything outside His will either.

Then we praise Him for everything He gives us, and accept Him as Master of our lives. Do we take on the tasks He gives us and live according to His will.
