- Massei - What Are Life's Journey's?
Movement is one of the basic signs of life. The soul has the ability to vitalize the physical body and make it move in both physical and spiritual dimensions. The tendency for physical, mental, and spiritual movement exists in anyone. Every person wants to grow and progress. There is a rule that says that every living thing moves. This is certainly true of our service to God. We all have an urge towards self-perfection, and a willingness to go beyond ourselves and achieve fulfillment by developing a connection to the infinite source of all of us, our divine essence. These concepts are reflected in this week's reading of the Torah, Massei. Massei means "journeys", and the reading counts the 42 different stages in the journey of the Jewish nation. It begins with the departure from the land of Egypt and ends with its entry into the Land of Israel. These 42 stages in the journey are reflected in the life of every person. From the day of his birth which means his personal "Exodus from Egypt" to his entry into a high level in the service of God which is hinted in the expression "Jordan Jericho" the ultimate revelation of his soul. This whole journey through the desert is meant to reflect a constant spiritual growth and is made by the power given to us from heaven. Even those stages in our lives that seem negative have a positive meaning in their source. Noah's sons can grow and reach very high spiritual levels. Our sages say that a Noahide who learns the 7 commandments can rise to the spiritual level of a high priest who enters the Holy of Holies! Of course, this is a life journey that includes stations of learning and strengthening with the 7 commandments of Noah. But this journey is highly rewarding and is even capable of bringing those who begin it to infinite ascension by learning and observing the 7 commandments of the sons of Noah. - How Are We Connected to the Giver of the 7 Commandments?
Everyone likes to do things of their own free will. But what about the 7 Noahide commandments? Do we also do them because our intellect requires it, or maybe because of the divine order? The book 'Deuteronomy', which we start reading this Shabbat, is different from the previous four books. However, the difference of this book is reflected in the fact that it was spoken by Moses from his own mouth. Moses transferred the words of the Torah in the previous books to the people of Israel as a messenger only, without involving his personality and intelligence. Whereas in the book 'Deuteronomy' the divine message was delivered through the mind and thought of Moses, so it appears as if it was "from his own mouth", but actually it was the will of God as spoken from the throat of Moses. Laws made by humans may change according to circumstance. But laws made by the Creator remain the same for all people at all times. God's Will, should have an influence on all the parts of our soul. In our minds, our feelings, and our thoughts. In this way, we connect all our inner forces to the service of God. The reward of those who do the 7 commandments because they were given to Moses at Mount Sinai is greater than those who do them only because their intellect says so. The seven commandments which Noahides observe are essentially kept because they were commanded by Moses on Mount Sinai. In doing so, they fulfill God's will for a refined world and this is the best preparation for the redemption that will be not only for the Jewish people but also for the Noahides. - How Are We Going to Ressurect?
Q&A between Leo Yuwono and Rabbi Perets on the Luz Bone - Ressurection & Cremation. The Resurrection Process "Just as a person goes, so he will return. If he died blind, deaf or mute, he will return blind, deaf or mute. As he goes clothed, he will return clothed. G‑d said, 'let them rise as they went—and afterwards I will heal them'"—Midrash Rabbah, Genesis 95. The very body that died will be resurrected. According to tradition, there is a miniscule bone in the upper spine called the luz bone. It is from this indestructible bone that G‑d will reconstruct the entire body when the time arrives for the Resurrection of the Dead. (Today, with our understanding of how DNA works, this age-old tradition doesn't seem so far-fetched.) Incidentally, this bone receives its only sustenance from the Melaveh Malka meal, the Saturday night meal that honors the Shabbat Queen as she goes on her way. Timeline The order of the Messianic redemption is as follows: First Moshiach comes and rebuilds the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The ingathering of all the exiles will then follow. The resurrection of the dead will occur forty years after the exiles return to the Land of Israel. Tzaddikim, the saintly righteous men and women of the generations, are an exception to this rule; they will be resurrected immediately with the arrival of Moshiach. First the dead who are buried in Israel will rise from their graves, they will be followed by the dead of the Diaspora, followed by the generation that left Egypt and died in the desert. Last of all will rise the Patriarchs and Matriarchs. Their resurrection is postponed so that they should have the nachas of waking to find all their children alive, well, and happy. The categories mentioned above will also be further subdivided. The more righteous individuals will be resurrected before the general population. Amongst these righteous individuals, those who were primarily preoccupied with Torah study will take precedence over those whose forte was mitzvah observance. The Midrash also expresses another opinion, whereby all the dead will be summoned to life via an alphabetical roll call. The humble, however, will be moved to the head of the pack. Those Alive at the Time of the Resurrection According to the Zohar, immediately before the resurrection, all those who are alive at that time will momentarily die, and then instantaneously be resurrected. This is in fulfillment of the verse (Genesis 3:19), "For you are dust and to dust you shall return." Also, this short death serves a spiritual purpose—it will cleanse the souls of all traces of the imperfect and tainted world it inhabited. They will then rise with a clean and pure slate. The Rebbe suggested that this process may be unnecessary. In the concluding paragraph of the Amidah prayer we say, "Let my soul be as dust [exceedingly humble] to all." Our nation has collectively accomplished this goal many times over—our spiritual returning to dust rendering it unnecessary to physically return to dust. Location All the dead will be resurrected in the land of Israel. Those who are buried outside the Holy Land, their bodies will burrow through the earth until they reach Israel, and there their souls will be reinstated into their bodies. For tzaddikim, special tunnels will form beneath the ground, in order to make the journey easier and more dignified. Avoiding this laborious process is one of the reasons why so many choose to be buried in the soil of the Holy Land. The Zohar explains the symbolic connection between the resurrection and the land of Israel. With the future redemption, the land of Israel will be rebuilt, never again to be destroyed or laid to waste. So, too, the souls which reenter the bodies during the resurrection will never again be subjected to death. - Is Religion Given by G-d ?
The world and humanity now seems occupied until lost in religion. Each claim theirs is the authentic, original, direct from G-D the creator of the universe. But if we will stop for a while and think, we will realize that religion is nothing more than man made or invention. What HE gave humanity is the USER MANUAL on how to live and behave here on earth, alligning ourself with this USER MANUAL means live according to our intended purpose. - What Happens To the Soul of a Noahide After Completing his/her life?
In this generation we witnessed the unprecedent phenomena amongst the nations, more and more non-jewish sould being attracted to Torah. Itself is a good sign, and we can say that is one of the sign of the Geulah a.k.a : Final Redemption. However, due to the still minimal teaching, source on this field, led to the Noahides doing a "best-guess" with the good intention for sure, from the teaching available which are meant for Jewish. With the motivation such as: "I would like to correct my conduct according to the Truth for the sake of G-d". In this Q&A with Leo Yuwono of Noahide Indonesia, Rabbi Moshe Perets explains on what happens to a Noahide soul after completing his/her life, how should the family honor the soul, and also taught us, the fact that we are now considered as the last generation, hence we need to wisely use our time, get our act together, learn Torah, in preparation of the Final Redemption. B'Ezrat Hashem, we can all be together when the Final Redemption materalized, soon in our generation. Berachot. - Should We Feel Grateful for Having Shoes?
Gratitude. Here is the principle. The recipient’s gratitude should not depend on the effort expended on his behalf. Deriving benefit from someone or something in and of itself requires an expression of gratitude. This appreciation must be shown not only to human beings, but to lower orders of creation as well. Rabbi Chaim Shmulevitz (1902-1979) The above reminds me of the story of the Kotzker Rebbe, a 19th century Hasidic teacher, who whenever he wore a pair of shoes, he would neatly wrap them in newspaper before throwing them away. He would say, "How can I just throw away such a beautiful pair of shoes that has served me so well?" That is a form of giving gratitude to shoes. The same goes for giving gratitude to our pets who keep us company, never criticize us and take us as we are. When do we thank them for their love and loyalty? How easy it is to criticize people, and how hard it can be to say thank you. While we often do so out of politeness, do we also say a heartfelt thank you for little things we so easily take for granted. To make it a little more personal for once: every week I receive a heartfelt thank you from a rabbi - for actually something I should be grateful and thankful for - and every week I experience as a result how important it is to say "thank you" even for seemingly small trivial things. And how far our gratitude goes to HaShem. When things go well for us, or we experience something extremely positive it is easy to say "thank you." But do we also say that for "everyday things", things we don't normally think about because they are so "ordinary". That we can hear, that we can feel, that fill in....And how far does our gratitude to Him extend to saying thank you for harder things in our lives, knowing that they are for the better? For difficult, "undesirable" situations and events, can we also say "thank you"? Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - Is Standing Still Going Backwards?
Enthusiasm Like a Bird, a person can reach undreamed-of heights as long as he works his wings. But if he relxes them for but one minute, he plummets downward. Rabbi Yisrael Salanter (1810-1883) It reminds me of the ascent to the altar in the Temple. The ascent was not to consist of steps. If you go up a flight of stairs it is very easy to stand still for a moment, with an incline you must always keep moving, you are either going up or down. A human being, unlike an angel, is always moving forward or backward. We grow or we shrink. Likewise a bird, it will have to keep using its wings, fold them together, then it falls down. There is always energy/power to be brought to the wings to keep going. If you have just discovered the way of the 7 Mitzvot of Noah you can be super enthusiastic and go for it full force. However, the trick is to also keep going, invest time in learning and invest time to improve yourself when the novelty wears off. When you become less enthusiastic, you can think of it as a bird that has to find the thermals to take off. Remember that he still has to bring power and energy to his wings to keep them spread, but sometimes it's important to seek out thermals, find people, books, youtubes that enliven your enthusiasm, so that after a while you can save your wings to fly higher and higher again on your own. - Should One Learn From Everyone?
In Ethics of the Fathers: Chapter Four Ben Zoma would say: Who is wise? One who learns from every man. As is stated (Psalms 119:99): "From all my teachers I have grown wise, for Your testimonials are my meditation." Who is strong? One who overpowers his inclinations. As is stated (Proverbs 16:32), "Better one who is slow to anger than one with might, one who rules his spirit than the captor of a city." Who is rich? One who is happy with his lot. As is stated (Psalms 128:2): "If you eat of toil of your hands, fortunate are you, and good is to you"; "fortunate are you" in this world, "and good is to you" in the World to Come. Who is honorable? One who honors his fellows. As is stated (I Samuel 2:30): "For to those who honor me, I accord honor; those who scorn me shall be demeaned." 2 Ben Azzai would say: Run to pursue a minor mitzvah, and flee from a transgression. For a mitzvah brings another mitzvah, and a transgression brings another transgression. For the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah, and the reward of transgression is transgression. 3 He would also say: Do not scorn any man, and do not discount any thing. For there is no man who has not his hour, and no thing that has not its place. 4 Rabbi Levitas of Yavneh would say: Be very, very humble, for the hope of mortal man is worms. Rabbi Yochanan the son of Berokah would say: Whoever desecrates the Divine Name covertly, is punished in public. Regarding the desecration of the Name, the malicious and the merely negligent are one and the same. 5 Rabbi Ishmael the son of Rabbi Yossei would say: One who learns Torah in order to teach, is given the opportunity to learn and teach. One who learns in order to do, is given the opportunity to learn, teach, observe and do. Rabbi Tzaddok would say: Do not separate yourself from the community. Do not act as a counselor-at-law (when serving as a judge). Do not make the Torah a crown to magnify yourself with, or a spade with which to dig. So would Hillel say: one who make personal use of the crown of Torah shall perish. Hence, one who benefits himself from the words of Torah, removes his life from the world. 6 Rabbi Yossei would say: Whoever honors the Torah, is himself honored by the people; whoever degrades the Torah, is himself degraded by the people. 7 His son, Rabbi Ishmael would say: One who refrains from serving as a judge avoids hatred, thievery and false oaths. One who frivolously hands down rulings is a fool, wicked and arrogant. 8 He would also say: Do not judge on your own, for there is none qualified to judge alone, only the One. And do not say, "You must accept my view," for this is their [the majority's] right, not yours. 9 Rabbi Jonathan would say: Whoever fulfills the Torah in poverty, will ultimately fulfill it in wealth; and whoever neglects the Torah in wealth, will ultimately neglect it in poverty. 10 Rabbi Meir would say: Engage minimally in business, and occupy yourself with Torah. Be humble before every man. If you neglect the Torah, there will be many more causes for neglect before you; if you toil much in Torah, there is much reward to give to you. 11 Rabbi Eliezer the son of Yaakov would say: He who fulfills one mitzvah, acquires for himself one angel-advocate; he who commits one transgression, acquires against himself one angel-accuser. Repentance and good deeds are as a shield against retribution. Rabbi Yochanan the Sandal-Maker would say: Every gathering that is for the sake of Heaven, will endure; that is not for the sake of Heaven, will not endure. 12 Rabbi Eliezer the son of Shamua would say: The dignity of your student should be as precious to you as your own; the dignity of your colleague, as your awe of your master; and your awe of your master as your awe of Heaven. 13 Rabbi Judah would say: Be careful with your studies, for an error of learning is tantamount to a willful transgression. Rabbi Shimon would say: There are three crowns—the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood and the crown of sovereignty—but the crown of good name surmounts them all. 14 Rabbi Nehora'i would say: Exile yourself to a place of Torah; do not say that it will come after you, that your colleagues will help you retain it. Rely not on your own understanding. 15 Rabbi Yannai would say: We have no comprehension of the tranquility of the wicked, nor of the suffering of the righteous. Rabbi Matya the son of Charash would say: Be first to greet every man. Be a tail to lions, rather than a head to foxes. 16 Rabbi Yaakov would say: This world is comparable to the antechamber before the World to Come. Prepare yourself in the antechamber, so that you may enter the banquet hall. 17 He would also say: A single moment of repentance and good deeds in this world is greater than all of the World to Come. And a single moment of bliss in the World to Come is greater than all of the present world. 18 Rabbi Shimon the son of Elazar would say: Do not appease your friend at the height of his anger; do not comfort him while his dead still lies before him; do not ask him about his vow the moment he makes it; and do not endeavor to see him at the time of his degradation. 19 Samuel the Small would say: "When your enemy falls, do not rejoice; when he stumbles, let your heart not be gladdened. Lest G‑d see, and it will be displeasing in His eyes, and He will turn His wrath from him [to you]" (Proverbs 24:17-18). 20 Elisha the son of Avuyah would say: One who learns Torah in his childhood, what is this comparable to? To ink inscribed on fresh paper. One who learns Torah in his old age, what is this comparable to? To ink inscribed on erased paper. Rabbi Yossei the son of Judah of Kfar HaBavli would say: One who learns Torah from youngsters, whom is he comparable to? To one who eats unripe grapes and drinks [unfermented] wine from the press. One who learns Torah from the old, whom is he comparable to? To one who eats ripened grapes and drinks aged wine. Said Rabbi Meir: Look not at the vessel, but at what it contains. There are new vessels that are filled with old wine, and old vessels that do not even contain new wine. 21 Rabbi Elazar HaKapor would say: Envy, lust and honor drive a man from the world. 22He would also say: Those who are born will die, and the dead will live. The living will be judged, to learn, to teach and to comprehend that He is G‑d, He is the former, He is the creator, He is the comprehender, He is the judge, He is the witness, He is the plaintiff, and He will judge. Blessed is He, for before Him there is no wrong, no forgetting, no favoritism, and no taking of bribes; know, that everything is according to the reckoning. Let not your heart convince you that the grave is your escape; for against your will you are formed, against your will you are born, against your will you live, against your will you die, and against your will you are destined to give a judgement and accounting before the king, king of all kings, the Holy One, blessed be He. Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya said: “The Holy One, blessed be He, wished to make the people of Israel meritorious; therefore He gave them Torah and mitzvot in abundant measure, as it is written (Isaiah 42:21): ‘The L‑rd desired, for the sake of his [Israel’s] righteousness, to make the Torah great and glorious.’” (Makkot 23b) Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - How did Abraham Met G-d?
The Oblication of Aknowledging our Creator Or the Prohibition of worshiping false gods. Psalm 115 teaches us the following against idols: Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell; they have hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk; they can make no sound in their throats. Psalm 19 says: The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky proclaims His handiwork. Day to day makes utterance, night to night speaks out. There is no utterance, there are no words, whose sound goes unheard. Their voice carries throughout the earth, their words to the end of the world. Idols do not bring answers to life's questions. Abram looked at nature and heard their words. He understood from that, that there must be One Only True G-d Who brought about and brings all things into being and Who controls and directs all things. We believe, with simple, childlike faith in G-d, that He is the Creator of everything and at the same time recognize that He is so great that He is beyond our understanding. G-d is Alone, is not corporeal and has a unique identity. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - Even When You're in a Bad Mood?
The Baal Shem Tov asks; Why did G-d have to hang Mount Sinai over the Jewish people (threating them if they don’t accept the Torah He would cursh them…) as in any event they said, “We accept the Torah.” However the lesson is that, “Even when you’re not in the mood…” (Baal Shem Tov) ... and your neighbor needs a listening ear, then you listen. ... and your neighbor needs help, then you help. ... and you have resolved to pray, then you pray. Man's task is to make this world a better place. For the other person who needs help, who needs a listening ear, for the world that needs repair, it is actually not of much importance whether you are in the mood to do your task. If a plant needs water and you don't give it it dies, if a person needs food and you don't give it he is hungry. But what about prayer? Is it appropriate to pray to G-d when you are not in the right mood? Our aim should always be to pray to G-d with as much concentration as possible, if we are not in the mood, it is an extra challenge. It is this extra effort that makes the relationship deeper, because then you are not doing it because you expect something in return at that moment, but purely for the sake of the relationship itself. That applies to prayer, that applies to tasks in the world. For how easy it is to listen to someone because then you can give advice and it makes you feel good. But listening and giving advice when you would rather be doing something else, that is really caring about your neighbor without self-interest. - Which Mistake Enosh Made?
The Oblication of Aknowledging our Creator Or the Prohibition of worshiping false gods. The prohibition against worshiping false idols consists of the prohibition against serving these false idols and it consists of the commandment to recognize and know G-d. One of the most important things is belief in Oneness of G-d and in His power. Psalms 33:6 testifies to His Great power. By the word of HaShem the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their hosts. With 10 utterances the universe and the world were created. Without any effort, without any effort, like a sigh. Psalms 119:89 says: Forever, O G-d, Your words stands firm in the heavens. From this we can learn that G-d's words are constant, if He stopped speaking the world would return to nothing. The mistake Enosh made was that he saw the sun, the moon and the stars and thought that G-d had given them the power to rule the world and that it was therefore appropriate to serve and worship them. The One whom we worship, give honor to, and thank is the Creator of heaven and earth. Let us therefore bless Him and give Him praise. Verse 23: וַיֹּ֨אמֶר בִּלְעָ֜ם לְבָלָ֗ק הִתְיַצֵּב֮ עַל־עֹלָתֶ֒ךָ֒ וְאֵֽלְכָ֗ה אוּלַ֞י יִקָּרֵ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ לִקְרָאתִ֔י וּדְבַ֥ר מַה־יַּרְאֵ֖נִי וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי לָ֑ךְ וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ שֶֽׁפִי׃ "Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offerings while I am gone. Perhaps HaShem will grant me a manifestation, and whatever is revealed to me I will tell you.” And he went off alone. Rashi: PERHAPS THE LORD WILL HAPPEN TO MEET ME — Perhaps: He is not accustomed to speak with me by day. There are many levels among the prophets. They receive their prophecy in a vision in a dream at night, or during the day. They do not have prophecy whenever they want. They need to direct their minds to God in happiness. Not so for Moses. He receive his prophecy while he was awake, and he could enter the Tent of Meeting to speak with HaShem if he wished. And he could enter the Tent of Meeting to speak with HaShem if he wished. Moses was the humblest man in the world, it was for this reason that he was worthy to receive the Torah and its details from HaShem. It is through him that the Noahides received their 7 commandments and their details as an everlasting and unchanging law. Any Noahide who accurately observes these 7 commandments because Moses the greatest prophet passed them on is a pious one of the nations. - What did God Commanded Adam?
The Obligation To Honor His Creator Or the prohibition of blasphemy In Genesis 2:16 we read: “And HaShem G-d commanded [upon] Adam…” This means that G-d commanded His Divinity and authority upon Adam. The three meanings of this statement are: 1 “I’m G-d; do not exchange Me”- for another god: the prohibition of idolatry. 2 “I’m G-d; do not curs Me”: the prohibition of blasphemy. 3 “I’m G-d; the fear of Me shall be upon you”- being the obligation to fear G-d. Fearing G-d is a part of the general commandment to guard one’s self against committing blasphemy. In Leviticus 24:15 we read: “Anyone who blasphemes G-d shall bear the guilt”. If we want to specify the prohibition of blasphemy, it is about cursing G-d or any of His attributes with any of His own divine names. Faith in G-d Who makes all things by the Word of His mouth, who governs all things and guides all things, the One True Creator and King of all creation, deserves only to be praised and adored by His creatures. We need to focus on our prayers to Him, reading Torah and other fundamentals of faith. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - What Makes You Happy ?
People search relenstlessly for a “city of happiness” not realizing that it could only be found in a “state of mind”. (Rabbi Avraham Pam 1913-2001) The "city of happiness" is all the happiness one expects to receive from the things one does not have. One has the expectation that if one buys that jacket, those shoes, that house, that car, etc. one will be happy. Or that if one takes that top job with a higher salary all problems will disappear like snow in the sun. Not realizing that this happiness is only short lived. The purchase soon becomes boring and the top job makes that in other areas extra unexpected costs are made so that the final amount per month will be the same. In addition, these purchases, or these changes are regularly made as camouflage for an entirely different problem. One buys the beautiful things for example because one thinks to increase the self-esteem or takes the job with more salary because one hopes to solve marital problems. Real happiness must come from within. Being happy with who you are, being happy with your family, being happy with what you have. Real happiness comes from contentment. In knowing and trusting that G-d gives each person exactly what they need. This does not mean that we should be passive because everything is apparently as it is. For who says that it is not the will of G-d to work on your marriage or on your self-esteem to improve it. Problems you experience you share with G-d and actively address. Where your work is in accordance with His Will you will experience improvement. Happiness means being connected with G-d who always has good intentions for you. Living with Him, trusting Him and working with Him. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - Numbers Chapter 24 - Torah Reading for Balak
Now Balaam, seeing that it pleased HaShem to bless Israel, did not, as on previous occasions, go in search of omens, but turned his face toward the wilderness. Balaam realized that HaShem wanted him to bless the people. Balaam devises a ruse. Now if he pointed out to HaShem that the people had sinned, perhaps a curse would have an effect. So he looked to the desert, where the people had made the golden calf. What Balaam overlooked was that HaShem is merciful. The people had repented, and HaShem had forgiven them. We are all human and all make mistakes. Mistakes with our fellow man we must make good with our fellow man, mistakes with HaShem we make right with Him. We can do this, for example, by saying the prayer of the Repentant. Prayer of the Repentant: O God, I have erred, sinned and willfully transgressed before You, and I have done that which is evil in Your eyes, especially with the sin(s) of ... (state the specific sins or errors). I am sincerely ashamed of my sins, and I repent and firmly undertake not to do so again. Please God, in Your infinite grace and compassion, forgive me sins and transgressions and grant me atonement, as it is written: "let the wicked abandon his way and the man of iniquity his thougths; and let him return unto God, and He will show him compassion, and to our God, for He will pardon abundantly. And it is written; "Do I desire at all that the wicked should die, says the Lord, God; it is rather that he return from his ways and live!" Verse 14 וְעַתָּ֕ה הִנְנִ֥י הוֹלֵ֖ךְ לְעַמִּ֑י לְכָה֙ אִיעָ֣צְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֛ה לְעַמְּךָ֖ בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית הַיָּמִֽים׃ And now, as I go back to my people, let me inform you ... what this people will do to your people in days to come.” Rashi: COME AND I WILL COUNSEL THEE what you have to do. And what is the counsel? The God of these people hates unchastity/ immorality, therefore tempt them to sin by means of thy women-folk. Balaam wanted the people to stumble through sexual immorality. From this we can learn that sexual morality is important. Man is created in the image of God. Therefore, it is important to treat the body with respect. One way to do that is to cover one's body appropriately, for man is not like an animal walking around naked. The clothing of man and woman should not be such that it can lead to immorality. For Jewish women, the upper body should be completely covered with a high neckline, the arms covered beyond the elbows and the legs covered beyond the knees. These rules for Jewish women are guidelines (but not strictly required) for Noahides. Noahides women may wear pants (if it is accepted within their social environment), but the knees must be covered even when sitting and the pants must not be tight or otherwise appear seductive. A hair covering for married women is not mandatory, but if women wish to go in the path of righteousness and humility before G-d can also choose to follow this practice. (For example, one can also wear a head covering during prayer, or a hair band in daily life as an intermediate form) Recall that one of the reasons for the Flood was sexually immoral behavior. Supplementary said that fashion style is not only clothing, but also body language, the way you speak etc. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - Numbers Chapter 26 - Torah Reading for Pinchas
Verse 11: וּבְנֵי־קֹ֖רַח לֹא־מֵֽתוּ׃ The sons of Korach, however, did not die. The prophet Samuel, his sons, and his grandsons were singers in the Temple. They were called the Korachites. I Chron. 6:18-23. is proof that the children of Korah did not died. The Book of Psalms states, For the leader; a Psalm of the sons of Korach (Ps. 49:1). Korach and his sons were swallowed up by the earth as punishment for their rebellion against Moses. A rebellion that came about because they did not see Moses as the spiritual leader of the generation, and they felt that any physical person could be the leader. By detaching from the spiritual and focusing on the physical alone you die. And so we see that Korach's punishment was that he was literally swallowed up by the earth - by the physical. However, the sons of Korach, at the height of the rebellion, became remorseful and repented. This made them less deeply swallowed by the earth and did not die. From this we learn that no matter how serious a mistake may have been, even rebelling against the leader of your generation, rebelling against the spiritual, rebelling against Torah there is always repentance and forgiveness possible. For this the following prayer can be used: A Prayer of the Repentant: O G-d, I have erred, sinned and willfully transgressed before You, and I have done that which is evil in Your eyes, especially with the sin(s) of … (state the specific sins or errors). I am sincerely ashamed of my sins, and I repent and firmly undertake not to do so again. Please G-d, in Your infinite grace and compassion, forgive my sins and transgressions and grant me atonement, as it is written: “Let the wicked abandon his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts; let him return to G-d, and He will have compassion upon him, and [let him return] to our G-d, for He will pardon abundantly.” [Isaiah. 55:7] And it is written: “Do I desire at all that the wicked should die, says the L-rd, G-d; it is rather that he return from his ways and live!” [Ezekiel 18:23] Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - Numbers Chapter 27 - Torah Reading for Pinchas
When you have seen it, you too shall be gathered to your kin, just as your brother Aaron was. For, in the wilderness of Zin, when the community was contentious, you disobeyed My command to uphold My sanctity in their sight by means of the water.” Those are the Waters of Meribath-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin. G-d had forgiven the grumbling people who did not believe they could enter the land, according to the word of Moses. This meant that the people would not die as 1 whole in the desert, but gradually over the next 40 years at the time when their life days would naturally be over. Since Moses was part of the people as a whole, one might mistakenly think that Moses did not enter the land for that reason as well. Therefore, it is specifically mentioned here that Moses died because he had not sanctified G-d's Name at the proper time. From this we learn that when someone makes a mistake that requires a consequence, it is important that that behavior be described concretely and specifically. Sometimes you see a leader, a teacher, a parent punish a group as a whole. However, not addressing each person individually and naming the undesirable behavior specifically will not lead to behavior change. And that it is also clear to the bystanders that behavior has consequences. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. - The heart as a Temple?
We need to build our hearts into a place where G-d wants to live. We build this place by observing the 7 Mitzvot in every detail as best we can and by giving charity to people, by being kind and friendly. Each person has the foundation within him to shape and build this place in his heart. Not everyone lives up to the 7 Mitzvot, not everyone is always kind or generous to their neighbor. To us the example to live as an example and to call people to build this place in their hearts. Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy. G-d, I will praise You publicly among the nations, and I will sing praise to You among the peoples who will come to Jerusalem at the time of Redemption. Throughout the long history, it was virtually impossible for Jews to publicly thank and praise G-d. Now in the time of redemption it is possible and we see in our days that more and more righteous Noahides - non-Jews are marching up to Israel and to Jerusalem to learn about G-d and to thank and praise Him. - What Are You Doing!
Ona'as Devarim נְצֹ֣ר לְשׁוֹנְךָ֣ מֵרָ֑ע וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ מִדַּבֵּ֥ר מִרְמָֽה׃ Guard your tongue from evil, your lips from deceitful speech. (Psalm 34:14) Words can heal and words can wound. When words wound we call it Ona'as Devarim - hurftul speech. It is important to be aware of the power of speech. Deceitful speech can also include questions like: what are you doing? When this question is not sincerely meant to find out what the other person is doing, but rather contains a form of criticism, it is hurtful for the person. With our question we actually want to say: how can you be so stupid because to do so, or what you do is not good enough. We sometimes say it to people who are in a learning process or are totally unaware of other ways and possibilities to solve a problem. You regularly hear this question said to children when they do an assignment of ours that they have not understood well enough. The question makes people insecure and is an attack on their self-esteem and self-confidence. If someone can do something better in your opinion, or should do it differently, ask them if you can help, set a good example and sometimes people are just entitled to make and experience their own mistakes then it is better to just be quiet. - What Did Abraham Teach His Guests
The Obligation To Honor His Creator Or the prohibition of blasphemy The opposite of cursing one of the Names of G-d is to bless G-d. When a person comes to recognize that G-d is the Creator of everything and makes everything constantly exist, he will feel the greatness of G-d and want to thank Him for everything he receives from Him. When a person prays before G-d, and when he wants to bless and thank G-d – e.g., to thank Him for his food, for his life, for his recovered health, or for a miracle that was done for him – he should direct his mind and speech to say verses from the Hebrew Bible, or he should praise G-d in a way of honoring His blessed Name. With this manner of prayer, G-d’s Name will be glorified. It was Abraham’s custom to teach all the people of the world that it is proper to thank and bless G-ds Name, and not to assign this level of honor to any other presumed power or any created being. “and there he [Abraham] proclaimed the Name of G-d, G-d of the universe” Let's take this example from Abraham and G-d for the food we receive in a way and manner that our environment sees and hears. And let's at least say the short version for Grace after meals: Blessed is the G-d of the Universe, from Whose bounty we haven eaten Brought By Angelique Sijbolts Angelique Sijbolts is one of the main writers for the Noahide Academy.
